Growing the Green Economy — A Transformative Afternoon in Johannesburg

Workshop Report: 30 October 2025, Sandton, Johannesburg

On 30 October 2025, I had the privilege of leading a vibrant and highly engaged Green Economy workshop in Sandton, Johannesburg, hosted by the initiative Orange Corners (an initiative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands) here in South Africa. The setting was electric: young business founders, SME owners, designers and sustainability champions all gathering to explore how we turn green ambition into business action.

Why this event mattered

The day was more than just talk. It was a space where strategy met hands-on action. Working together, we uncovered how small and medium enterprises can play a major role in the green transition: not just through compliance, but through innovation, value creation and meaningful impact.
A core insight of the workshop was clear: there is a strong appetite among SMEs in South Africa to engage seriously with ESG (environmental, social and governance) issues and the green economy. The large number of participants keen to sign up for follow-up support reinforced this.

The programme: What we covered

In collaboration with our partners SynPraX and Socio-Elevate, the agenda had four main parts:

  • Mapping business strategy to the green economy – We started with a framework for how to convert sustainability challenges into business opportunities. This included value-proposition thinking, identifying circular economy levers, and exploring business model innovation that reduces waste and carbon while creating revenue streams.
  • Practical tools for SMEs to act now – Participants were encouraged into discussions such as: assessing current practices and materials for carbon and waste intensity; redesigning product or service flows for reuse, refill, repair; and pivoting to low-carbon or zero-waste inputs. We looked at case-based scenarios and pulled them apart to extract practical next steps.
  • Pitching for impact and business viability + access to support – We guided the participants in how to craft short partner or investor-ready pitches that speak both to environmental/social impact and to business viability. Then we introduced the support opportunity: all participants were invited to book a free 1-hour consultation with Sustainbios, SynPraX and Socio-Elevate. During that consultation we used the Green Finance Readiness app developed by Sustainbios — based on the South African Green Finance Taxonomy — to assess whether each participant’s green-project idea was viable. Following the app walkthrough, the consultation provided tailored coaching on their green projects and next-steps to strengthen their pitch and business case.
  • Understanding Carbon Markets and Green Finance Instruments – No conversation about the Green Economy is complete without exploring how businesses can benefit from — and contribute to — emerging carbon markets. During the session, we unpacked the fundamentals of carbon credits and green bonds, demystifying how these mechanisms create both environmental and financial value.

Participants learned:

  • How carbon credits work — from measuring emissions reductions to generating verified credits that can be traded or sold.
  • The distinction between compliance markets (regulated systems) and voluntary markets, and what’s currently shaping the South African landscape.
  • How green bonds enable investment in sustainable projects, providing an avenue for SMEs to access climate finance and attract sustainability-focused investors.
  • The role of the South African Green Finance Taxonomy in setting credible standards for what qualifies as “green” finance.
We also discussed the importance of transparency and integrity in these markets — ensuring that environmental claims are backed by measurable results. The discussion sparked great ideas among participants about future opportunities to integrate carbon-reduction projects and financing mechanisms into their business models.

The partnership & the free consultation

Our collaboration with SynPraX and Socio-Elevate was a key strength of the day. Socio-Elevate Solutions is a South-African company offering advisory in areas such as enterprise & supplier development, socio-economic compliance and transformation support. (socioelevate.co.za) SynPraX brought complementary expertise in sustainability consulting and business development.
The opportunity we extended to participants — the free consultation plus the app-based diagnostic — was designed to turn inspiration into action. SMEs walked out of the workshop not only with ideas, but with a pathway to concrete support. Most participants expressed strong interest in this follow-up, which underlines how ready the market is for ESG and sustainability support.

The energy in the room was palpable. Founders asking sharp questions about resource loops. SME owners starting to map how energy, water and waste can be cost-reducing rather than cost-adding. I left that afternoon feeling inspired and excited about the potential of the green economy in South Africa — especially when enterprise, design and sustainability expertise come together.

What this means for the future

  • The interest level among SMEs signals that the green economy is no longer niche: it’s becoming mainstream business practice.
  • By combining sustainability frameworks with business rigour (model, finance, pitch), SMEs have a real route to growth – and not just compliance.
  • Partnerships like that of Orange Corners + Sustainbios + SynPraX + Socio-Elevate create scaffolding: training, mentorship, diagnostics, follow-up consultations. That scaffolding is what helps ideas take flight.

A heartfelt thank you to Orange Corners South Africa for hosting and driving the ecosystem for young sustainable businesses. And to every participant who brought their voice, questions and ambition — you are the real change-makers!
